1. LEAD STORIES: Most papers gave top play on Thursday morning to
Japan Post's business improvement plan submission to the Ministry of
Internal Affairs and Communications.
2. "No Path to Dialogue in Sight" The liberal Asahi wrote from
Washington (6/25): "The Obama administration's strategy of solving
the issue of Iran's suspected nuclear development through dialogue
is faltering in the face of the turmoil in Iran following the recent
presidential election there. Although the administration strongly
condemned Iran on June 23 for causing bloodshed, the path toward
dialogue has been obscured. As the public is calling for a tough
response [to Tehran], the administration is urged to make a
difficult choice [between dialogue and a tough response]....
President Obama apparently does not intend to change his policy of
resolving such issues as Iran's nuclear development and its support
for terrorists through 'unconditional dialogue' with the nation. The
President envisages Supreme Leader Khamenei as his counterpart in
dialogue with Iran in the view that he has the real power over
Iran's defense and diplomatic policies. However, Khamenei is one of
the people being held responsible for causing the current turmoil
over unclear management of the election. Involvement with such a
person could carry the risk of provoking criticism toward President
Obama."
