SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - IRAN

1. LEAD STORIES: Top items on Wednesday morning
included questionable corporate donations received by Finance
Minister Yosano.

2. "'Democracy' Is Tested in Iran" The business-oriented Nikkei
editorialized (6/24): "Political confrontation [between reformists
and conservatives] is developing into a crisis that is undermining
the basis of the Iranian political system. The Iranian authorities
are tightening information control by prohibiting media coverage of
demonstrations and detaining journalists. However, they must not
forget that the world is closely watching Iran.... A rift over
election results is exposing a much more profound schism over
'freedom of speech' in Iran. The legitimacy of Iran's political
system will be questioned and its international isolation will
deepen if it continues to use force and allow bloodshed to occur in
cracking down on demonstrations."

3. "Iran Taking Harder Diplomatic Approach" The liberal Asahi wrote
(6/24): "Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iran has been
trumpeting anti-American and anti-Israeli foreign policies. It has a
history of trying to unite its people by playing up the presence of
a 'foe.' In the face of a mounting division within the nation,
Tehran again appears to be hopeful about cementing domestic unity by
criticizing the U.S. and Europe."
