SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - IRAN AND U.S. FINANCIAL REFORM PLAN
1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Monday morning included an
Iranian state media report saying that at least 10 people were
killed and 100 injured in clashes on Saturday between demonstrators
and police.
2. "Fairness Should Be Guaranteed" The liberal Mainichi
editorialized (6/21): "... There has been a certain level of trust
in the transparency and fairness of elections in Iran.... Many
people in Iran may think that Iran is more democratic than other
Middle East nations and that there is no reason for the U.S. and
Arab nations to criticize their country. However, they can have such
pride only when their elections are trustworthy. Once distrust of
the fairness of elections emerges, doubts about the nation's unique
political system could arise.... The Guardian Council of the
Constitution, which supervises elections, has expressed its
readiness to accept a partial recount of the votes.... Iran should
take measures that are acceptable not only for its people but also
for the international community. That will also benefit the Iranian
leadership."
3. "Historic Opportunity Should Not Be Missed" The liberal Mainichi
wrote in an editorial (6/21): "... President Obama put forward a
financial reform plan, which he was proudly said was 'on a scale not
seen since the reform that followed the Great Depression'....
However, the proposals, which include only 'improvements,' cannot be
called drastic reforms that are sufficient to address the gravity
and seriousness of the damage caused by the tsunami [of the
financial crisis].... The reform plan should not be watered down due
to political compromises for the protection of vested interests. An
opportunity to fundamentally review the financial system only arises
after a historic crisis like the current predicament."
