1. LEAD STORIES: Wednesday morning's Asahi front-paged a report
from Washington claiming that the Obama administration informed the
Japanese government on Tuesday of its decision to nominate
California lawyer John Roos as the new U.S. Ambassador to Japan.
2. "Force Alone Can Not Bring Peace" The liberal Tokyo Shimbun
editorialized (5/20): "The Tamil armed group, which had been
fighting a civil war for more than 25 years, has been put down.
However, the dissatisfaction of the people who have been
discriminated against cannot be contained by force. The road to real
peace will be very long if specific measures for reconciliation fail
to be presented... Although President Rajapaksa has put forward a
policy to give the Tamils a certain level of authority, formulating
a concrete policy that is acceptable to the Tamils is essential. It
will also be necessary to create a framework under which the Tamils
can take part in national politics on an equal footing with the
Sinhalese."
