1. LEAD STORIES: All Monday morning papers gave top or front-page
play to the increasing number of cases of domestic infection of H1N1
influenza confirmed in Japan.
2. "Political Oppression in Burma Unpardonable" The liberal Mainichi
editorialized (5/18): "Burmese democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi,
who is under house arrest, was indicted, and court proceedings for
her will begin today... Even if the American national's intrusion
into her house was only accidental, the military junta apparently
took advantage of the incident in order to suppress her influence in
the upcoming general election... The influence of China and India
upon Burma is significant. As neighbors to Burma, they should
respond firmly... The indictment of Aung San Suu Kyi, which took
place following a series of autocratic actions, is not only inhumane
but also demonstrates the fact that the democratization plan
advocated by the junta is a mere lie."
