1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page stories on Monday morning included
Sunday's announcement by the Health Ministry that another Japanese
was confirmed to be infected with the new H1N1 influenza strain,
bringing the total number of cases in Japan to four.
2. "Clear Departure Needed from Cold War Mentality"
On a recent U.S.-Russia foreign ministerial in Washington, during
which the two ministers reportedly expressed their willingness to
start new arms control talks, the liberal Asahi editorialized
(5/11): "At the height of the Cold War, confrontation (between the
two countries) over regional issues often derailed bilateral nuclear
reduction negotiations. What is important at present is to clearly
depart from that Cold War mentality and dramatically reduce nuclear
arsenals, which were produced in large quantities during the Cold
War.... The two countries being overly sensitive to such issues as
the number of warheads and missiles or the capabilities of such
weapons would stall nuclear negotiations, something that happened
repeatedly in the Cold War era. Such folly should be avoided."
