ECONOFF delivered reftel invitation and draft statement to
Annemaaike Tempelaar, Policy Advisor in the Dutch MFA's UN
and International Financial Institutions Department.
(Tempelaar is the overall coordinator for the Dutch
delegation to UNGA.) The Dutch PermRep to the UN, Ambassador
Herman Schaper, will likely represent the Netherlands at the
September 26 Food Security Event. The Netherlands is not
requesting a speaking role. (Note: Given the Netherlands'
USD 670 million annual food security program in Africa,
Minister for Development Cooperation Bert Koenders had
previously expressed an interest in attending the event.
However, he must return from UNGA to the Netherlands on
September 24 and therefore cannot attend. End note.) The
Netherlands participated in the Food Security program at the
G8 Summit in L'Aquila and endorsed the Joint Statement on
Global Food Security. Tempelaar indicated that the Dutch
will likely endorse the draft statement for the September 26
event as well. The statement is currently circulating among
relevant MFA offices; post will report any additional
responses septel.
