(C) As requested, Charge raised points reftel with Georgian
Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze September 16 and asked for
Georgia's support. FM Vashadze responded that Georgia was
prepared to help the U.S. regarding Iran and would be
supportive. However, according to Vashadze, Iranian
officials had also suggested that Georgia needed to be
careful in its dealings with Tehran, otherwise Iran would
consider formulating new policies toward the separatist
territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In Vashadze's
view, this was a veiled threat regarding possible recognition
of the two territories.
