UNCLAS TBILISI 001508 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: PREL TSPL GG SUBJECT: GEORGIA AND U.S. SIGN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT REF: STATE 77202 ¶1. On August 6, the U.S. and Georgia signed the "Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Georgia on Science and Technology Cooperation." The Ambassador signed for the United States and Minister of Education and Science Nika Gvaramia signed for Georgia. The signing of this agreement marks the expansion of our bilateral science relationship. This agreement furthers the goals outlined in the U.S.- Georgia Charter on Strategic Partnership, which seeks, among other goals, to promote increased cooperation in scientific activities and research. ¶2. The signing ceremony was well-covered in the local press and has prompted an outpouring of interest from local universities and scientific institutes. Representatives of these institutions have already been in touch with the mission in order to find ways to improve cooperation and contacts with the Embassy and other U.S. counterpart institutions.
