SUBJECT: SWEDES DENY EGYPTIANS' ASYLUM APPEAL
REF: STOCKHOLM 527
(U) On November 20, the Swedish government rejected the
appeal by two Egyptians, Mohammed Alzery and Ahmed Agiza, to
overturn the denial of their asylum requests. The two
Egyptian nationals were originally denied asylum and deported
to Egypt in 2001. After UNHCR criticism of Sweden's handling
of the case, in 2007 the Swedish government instructed the
Migration Board to review the men's appeal of denial of their
asylum request. The Swedish Helsinki Committee represented
both men, who remain in Egypt, but only Agiza is
incarcerated. Both men were awarded damages in 2008 by the
Swedish Court, related to the circumstances of deportation
(reftel).
