LIAISON COMMITTEE MEETING
REF: STATE 95980
Amb. Robert Rydberg, who heads the MFA,s Middle East Unit
(A/S equivalent),will represent Sweden at the September 22
AHLC meeting. MFA Director for International Cooperation Jan
Knutsson may also attend the meeting, MFA Mediterranean Group
Chief Frederik Floren told POL Counselor September 16. As EU
President, Sweden will offer strong support for PM Fayyad,s
two-year plan and indicate a readiness of the EU "to do
more." Sweden plans also to raise concerns over movement and
access issues in the West Bank and over the need to open the
Gaza borders. Sweden also expects to praise the recent
decision of increased donor support from the United States
and Saudi Arabia but "does not expect a new decision now" on
additional EU support, despite the anticipated end of year
shortfalls. Rather, it is "important that the Arabs now pay
more and follow up on commitments made at the Paris
Conference," Floren said.
