SUBJECT: SWEDES POSITIVE TO NEW MEMBERS JOINING THE CONTACT
GROUP FOR PIRACY

REF: A. STATE 66632

B. STOCKHOLM 404

(U) Emboffs received a follow-up response to reftels A and B
from Anna Sundstrom, Desk Officer in the Security Policy
Department at the Swedish MFA, on July 27. Sundstrom, who
works with Operation Atalanta-related issues, responded that
Sweden views the Contact Group as "more of a coordinating
forum rather than as a small club for the most initiated
actors." Accordingly, Sweden would not object to more
countries joining the Contact Group. She stated this would
help coordination efforts off the Horn of Africa, increase
efficiency and avoid overlapping work. Sundstrom stressed
the importance that Sweden attaches to close coordination
between the Contact Group for Piracy and the long-standing
Contact Group for Somalia to insure that Sweden acts
coherently and with a long-term focus.
