1. Swedish MFA Desk Officer for the Middle East, Maria
Velasco Ullenhag, told us February 23, that Gunilla Carlsson,
Minister for International Development Cooperation, will
represent Sweden at the Sharm conference on March 2. Sweden
is still reviewing the amount it will pledge at the
conference. She commented that Sweden, which is one of EU's
largest donors to the Palestinians, has budgeted about $82
million for 2009 to the Palestinian Authority, including $49
million in humanitarian aid that is currently being
distributed. Ullenhag noted that Sweden is the third largest
contributor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency,
after the U.S. and the E.U.
2. Ullenhag stated that Sweden supports opening the borders
to Gaza immediately and unconditionally in order to restore
the Palestinian economy. Sweden also hopes to see a revived
peace process with increased international participation that
features a strong U.S. role and cooperation with the E.U.
