SECURITY IMPLICATIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

1. This is an action request. See paragraphs 2-4.
2. The Department informs USUN that it has prepared
an official response to the request of the UN on the
possible security implications of climate change for
the Secretary-General's report to the sixty-fourth
session of the UN General Assembly, as requested in
resolution A/63/281. This response was requested
in a note verbale from the UN Division of Economic
and Social Affairs (DESA)dated 17 June 2009 (ref A).
3. USUN is requested to deliver the U.S. response,
under cover of a diplomatic note, to DESA. Due to
its length, the U.S. response will be sent in a
separate message via email.
4. Department points of contact for copies of the
U.S. response are OES/EGC Shira Yoffe
(YoffeSB@state.gov; 202-647-3934) and IO/EDA
Rebecca Webber (WebberRE2@state.gov; 202-647-2963).
