SUBJECT: ACTION REQUEST: USG PARTICIPATION IN UNRWA HLE
STEERING COMMITTEE
This is an action request.
1. Mission is instructed to participate in the 12-member ad
hoc preparatory committee established to commemorate the 60th
anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Relief
and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East
(UNRWA) during the General Assembly's upcoming 64th session.
Mission should work to ensure that events and/or documents
related to this commemoration are focused solely on UNRWA's
humanitarian efforts and are not politicized in any way. It
is the USG position that UNRWA is a critical humanitarian
partner devoted to assisting Palestine refugees. As a key
supporter of UNRWA and its operations, the USG would like to
see this position reflected in the declaration and
commemoration events tentatively scheduled for October 2009.
Department would appreciate regular front channel reporting
on these preparatory meetings.
2. Department POCs are PRM/ANE Monique Ramgoolie
(202-663-3103) and IO/RHS Cari Enav (202-647-5070).
