(SBU) The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is a body of 18 independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by its States parties. The Committee was established under ECOSOC Resolution 1985/17 to carry out the monitoring functions assigned to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in part IV of the Covenant. Members are elected for four year terms by members of ECOSOC. On August 1, Yuri Kolosov of Russia resigned his position on the Committee. Russia has subsequently nominated Abashidze Aslan Khuseinovich to serve for the remainder of Kolosov's term, which ends on December 31, 2010. There have been no other nominations to fill Kolosov's seat. The election will take place December 15. ¶3.
