1. (S) In response to reftel points, Acting Foreign Minister
Krassimir Kostov told the Charge that Bulgaria would
definitely support the upcoming U.S. decision on Afghanistan
and would prepare to express its support publicly. He noted
that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is following press
reports on the U.S. decision making process very closely and
is interested to get the full details of the new U.S. plan as
soon as they are available. Kostov emphasized that Bulgaria
will continue to strongly support the overall mission. We
will engage senior Ministry of Defense leadership to explore
in greater detail avenues for further Bulgarian contributions
to Afghanistan.
