Macedonia currently has 164 combat troops in Afghanistan and
will increase this by another 79 troops starting in February
2010, serving alongside the Vermont National Guard's
deployment. As part of its mission set, the VNG contingent
will participate in OMLTs and is expected to participate
POMLTs as well. Macedonia has served in ISAF since its
inception.
As a relatively poor country by European standards, we do not
assess that Macedonia will be able to contribute to the
various trust funds for Afghanistan, but Ambassador will
raise this with the Prime Minister when they next meet, which
may be as soon as November 28. Post will follow up.
