(SBU) Political Unit Chief met with MFA South Asia Assistant
Director Chen Kien Pin May 19 to urge Singapore to support
the forthcoming UN humanitarian appeal for Pakistan (reftel).
Chen said Singapore is closely monitoring developments in
Pakistan and that he will report our request to his
superiors. Chen highlighted the GOS announcement on April 30
that it will contribute US$30,000 to support UNICEF
humanitarian relief efforts in Sri Lanka, and noted that in
his view, the humanitarian crisis situation in Pakistan is
more dire and has broader regional implications than the
situation in Sri Lanka. Chen added that he has already
recommended to his superiors that Singapore consider making a
contribution to the upcoming UN appeal, but he did not think
the GOS had yet made a decision whether to contribute.
