(C) ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT)
Director General for South Asian and Pacific Affairs Choi
Jong-moon told Post on May 22 that ROK President Lee
Myung-bak would raise the issue of Aung San Suu Kyi's ongoing
detention and trial at a bilateral meeting with Burmese Prime
Minister Thein Sein during the ROK-ASEAN summit on Jeju
Island June 1-2. As FM Yu Myung-hwan had indicated during a
press conference on May 21, Lee would "convey the concerns of
the ROKG and the international community" to Thein during
what was anticipated to be a 30-minute meeting, Choi said.
The MOFAT press secretary would speak to the press following
the meeting; Choi acknowledged questions about Aung San Suu
Kyi were likely. Choi, whose previous assignment was DCM in
Rangoon, said that South Korea had been very much out in
front in its support for Aung San Suu Kyi and the National
League for Democracy (NLD),especially compared with all
other Asian countries. It had cut off development loans to
Burma in 2005, for example, and actively reached out to the
NLD and sent representatives to NLD events.
