SUBJECT: Delayed ROKG Response to Ban on Trade in Live Swine
REF: STATE 44254
1. Econ and FAS delivered reftel demarche to the appropriate
officials of the Ministries of Agriculture and Foreign Affairs and
Trade officials regarding Korea's ban on the importation of live
swine from the United States.
2. Mr. Kim Yong Sang at Korea's Ministry of Food, Agriculture,
Forestry and Fish (MIFAFF) and Ms. Lee Sohn-ae with the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) both stressed that they were well
aware of the USG concerns regarding the ROKG's ban on live swine.
3. MOFAT's Ms. Lee told Econoff that the ROKG would not be in a
position to respond before next week.
