RECOGNITION OF ABKHAZIA, SOUTH OSSETIA
REF: STATE 24186
Classified By: POL M/C Joseph Y. Yun. Reasons 1.4(b/d)
(C) POLOFF delivered reftel points on avoiding actions that
could be portrayed as conferring recognition on Abkhazia and
South Ossetia to ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
(MOFAT) Russia Division Deputy Director Park Ki-chang and
Central Europe Division Third Secretary Kim Ye-jee.
Underscoring the ROKG's non-recognition of the two
territories, the MOFAT officials said they understood U.S.
concerns and would convey them to relevant personnel both in
and out of Korea. They also expressed appreciation for the
U.S. Statement on Russian Bases in Georgia. It was Seoul's
position that the resolution of the Abkhazia and South
Ossetia matters required an international approach.
