REF: STATE 88582
Classified By: Political Officer Jennifer Spande for reason 1.4 (b).
(C) Poloffs delivered reftel demarche June 8 to Eduardo
Chihuailaf of the MFA's Human Rights Division. Chile plans
to support the extension of the rapporteur's mandate, he
said. Chile has been considering co-sponsoring the
resolution but has not yet decided if it will do so.
Chihauilaf noted that Ghana, Senegal, Mauritius, Zambia,
Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and Burundi were more moderate
members of the Africa Group who might be persuaded to support
the resolution. He noted that Egypt opposes in principle
rapporteurs focusing on a single country, and voted against a
similar resolution to extend the mandate of the rapporteur
for Burundi even though Burundi supported the extension.
