Econoff delivered ref demarche June 5 to Ana Maria Saldias,
U.S. Desk Officer at Chile's General Directorate of
International Economic Affairs (DIRECON) at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. DIRECON is the trade-ministry equivalent in
Chile. Saldias responded that Chile needed time to digest
the idea of increasing transparency in export licensing
before taking a position. DIRECON will disseminate the
background materials to other offices as well as other
government agencies (e.g., Customs) so that the GOC can
consider the proposal and make an informed decision.
