1. (C) PolCouns met with Joaquin Maza Martelli, Director
General of Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
(MFA),September 28 to discuss Iran's continued development
of its nuclear program. Maza was familiar with the issue and
expressed concern with Iran's recent missile tests. Maza
said he would provide the USG non-paper and a recommendation
to the Foreign Minister. In response to Maza's query as to
what type of public support the U.S. seeks for holding Iran
to its international obligations, PolCouns suggested
well-timed comments in the press would be most helpful.
2. (SBU) Post will notify the Department if it receives a
further response from the MFA and will pass any relevant
press statements to ISN/RA.
