1. This cable contains an action request. Please see
paragraph two.
2. Mark D. Jones, ATF Regional Firearms Advisor (RFA) for
Central America, proposes scheduling a familiarization visit
to post the week of November 16, 2009. In addition to
briefing interested parties on the role of the newly-created
position, ATF/RFA will discuss Merida-sponsored firearms
violence reduction initiatives including firearms tracing,
ballistics/forensics, and other investigative capacity
building programs for local law enforcement entities.
3. ATF/RFA requests that post convene the Merdia Working
Group, and as feasible arrange for meetings with appropriate
host country law enforcement counterparts to begin the
discussion on the way forward on arms trafficking and
violence reduction in the region.
4. Country clearance request to follow septel via ECC. POC is
