ELECTION
REF: 82575
Classified By: A/Political Minister Counselor J. Liam Wasley for reason
s 1.4 (b) and (d)
(C) POLOFF met with Minister Vincenza Lomonaco, MFA Deputy
Director General for Cultural Promotion, to deliver demarche
on USG candidate preferences for the September 17 election of
the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organization's (UNESCO) Director-General. POLOFF shared the
list of five candidates the USG believes are well qualified.
While Min Lomonaco would not indicate which candidates the
GOI favored, she did say that "the US and Italy are on the
same page" suggesting that Italy was likely to vote for one
of the specified candidates. She also agreed on the
assesment of qualifications for the specified candidates.
Without prompting by poloff, she also lamented the problems
that the Egyptian candidate had created, thus eliminating
himself as a viable candidate.
