Classified By: Political-Military Counselor J. Liam Wasley for reasons
1.4(b) and 1.4(d)
1. (C) POLOFF discussed reftel demarche with MFA Asia,
Oceania, Pacific and Antarctic Office Director Adriano Monti
on December 2. Monti agreed with all of the points in the
demarche and asserted that the GOI continues to share the US
strategy on dealing with the military junta that rules Burma.
The GOI believes it is important for the international
community to press the GOB on the importance of dialogue with
the opposition and for National League for Democracy (NLD)
leader Aung San Suu Kyi to be able to meet with members of
the Central Executive Committee. The GOI will continue to
work with other EU countries in calling for an internal
dialogue in Burma to move political reform forward and ensure
an inclusive electoral process.
