REPORT
REF: SECSTATE 98567
Classified By: Deputy Political Military Counselor J. Liam Wasley for r
easons 1.4 (b) and (d).
1. (C) SUMMARY: The Italian MFA supports the U.S. position
on the Goldstone report. The MFA emphasized the importance
of the report "staying in Geneva" as part of the debate in
the Human Rights Council (HRC). The MFA also hopes the
report does not have a negative impact on the peace process.
END SUMMARY
2. (C) PolOff delivered reftel points on September 25 to
Laura Carpini, Director of Human Rights and Multilateral
Affairs in the MFA Office of Political Cooperation. Carpini
stated that the MFA has the "same position as the U.S." on
the report and does not wish for the report's substance to be
taken up outside the milieu of the HRC.
3. (C) The MFA is studying the substance of the report, but
has deemed it necessary to have the opportunity to fully
examine its findings as it is a substantial document.
Carpini noted that Italy abstained from approval of the
fact-finding mission because it "focused only on Israel."
She pointed out that all 27 EU members abstained due to the
unilateral nature of the mandate.
