1. (C) Post has confirmed news reports that 38 year-old
female political prisoner Tin Tin Htway (alt. spelling Htwe)
died of a brain aneurysm on Wednesday, December 23.
According to members of her family, she suffered from heart
disease and hypertension. Tin Tin Htway, a former member of
the National League for Democracy, was arrested in September
2007 for her involvement in the monk-led protests. She was
sentenced in November 2007 to a term of three years and three
months with hard labor.
2. (C) Tin Tin Htway's family reports that she was denied
medical treatment at the beginning of her incarceration, but
was transferred to a hospital outside the prison compound
before her death. According to the Thailand-based Assistance
Association for Political Prisoners-Burma (AAPP),this is the
third death of a political prisoner in custody in 2009.
