1. (C) Lawyers for Aung San Suu Kyi and her two assistants
presented appeal arguments September 18 to the Rangoon
Divisional Court. As expected, ASSK's lawyers argued that
her conviction for violating her house arrest was baseless
because the 1974 Constitution and corresponding laws under
which she was charged are no longer valid (Ref A). ASSK was
not present at the session; police Special Branch effectively
denied her September 11 request to attend (Ref B).
Divisional Court judges announced they will render a decision
on October 2. A further level of appeal is possible
thereafter.
