1. (C) Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK) met with her lawyers August
6 for two hours. According to lawyer and National League for
Democracy spokesman Nyan Win, ASSK is in good health and
spirits, even making jokes throughout the meeting. The
August 6 discussions focused not on her current trial
(Reftel) but on a separate civil court case concerning a
cousin's attempt to sell a portion of ASSK's family compound.
ASSK's cousin, retired army officer Lt. Col. Khin Maung Aye,
on July 24 published a public notice in a local newspaper
claiming he owned a portion of the compound and had sold it.
The notice said any objections must be submitted within one
week. ASSK's legal team denies his claim and has written a
letter of objection to his lawyers.
2. (C) Nyan Win said he does not expect the legal team will
meet with ASSK again prior to the scheduled August 11 verdict
in her ongoing trial. However, Nyan Win had earlier
indicated he expects the verdict will be further delayed if
detained American John Yettaw is hospitalized past August 9.
(Note: Yettaw has been undergoing treatment at Yangon
General Hospital since August 2 for epileptic seizures. It
is unclear when he will be discharged and returned to Insein
Prison. Burma's Chief of Police and Deputy Home Affairs
Minister, MajGen Khin Yi, told a group of diplomats and
journalists August 7 that whether or not Mr. Yettaw's health
affects the timing of the August 11 trial session "depends on
the doctors and the judges." End note.)
