1. (U) Burmese health officials confirmed August 6 they
have diagnosed a total of 15 A/H1N1 cases in Burma. The
latest case is a three-year-old child with a relative who had
been diagnosed with A/H1N1 upon returning from Singapore
August 1. Health authorities are monitoring all passengers
that traveled on the same Silk Air flight with the infected
traveler, as well as relevant airport staff. Of the 15
officially identified A/H1N1 cases identified, 10 have been
discharged from Burmese medical facilities after making full
recoveries. The remaining five remain under medical care at
Rangoon hospitals.
2. (SBU) Although international press reports and public
health officials continue to speculate that the actual number
of cases could be higher, the regime is striving to appear
transparent regarding A/H1N1. State-run New Light of Myanmar
has had regular reporting on the status of A/H1N1, including
identified cases and prevention methods, since the Health
Ministry reported Burma's first case June 28.
