SUBJECT: BURMA'S A/H1N1 CASES RISE TO TEN

1. (SBU) Burmese health authorities reportedly this week
confirmed another case of A/H1N1 -- a 57-year-old man
returning on a flight from Singapore -- bringing the number
of known cases in Burma to ten. Authorities are monitoring
other passengers and airport staff from the July 20 Silk Air
flight. The newest case comes on the heels of two A/H1N1
cases last week involving a 42-year-old man and his three and
a half-year-old daughter who returned to Burma from Australia
via a Thai Airways flight on July 16. International press
reports and public-health officials speculate the number of
cases could be higher; inadequate health care and testing
facilities complicate diagnosis and containment. WHO
officials in Burma confirm that four patients have recovered
from A/H1N1 and have been discharged. We do not yet know the
status of the other patients.
