1. (C) UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari arrived in Rangoon
on June 26 at 10:00 a.m. World Food Program Country Director
Chris Kaye told us he and UN Resident Coordinator Bishow
Parajuli met Gambari at the Rangoon airport for approximately
10 minutes before Gambari departed for Nay Pyi Taw, where he
will spend the night. As far as Kaye knows, there were no
meetings scheduled for Gambari today. Kaye said Gambari will
meet with MOFA officials June 27, but it is not clear at this
point whether that session will include FM Nyan Win.
2. (C) Meanwhile, Acting ILO Country Liaison Piyamal
Pichawongswe told us Gambari plans to return to Rangoon on
June 27 and is tentatively scheduled to meet with the UN
Country Team in the afternoon. Pichawongswe did not have any
information regarding who else Gambari will meet in Nay Pyi
Taw or Rangoon. According to Kaye, ResRep Parajuli urged
Gambari to meet with the diplomatic corps before departing,
but Kaye told us he thinks Gambari may prefer a more
"low-key" visit. Gambari is expected to leave for Bangkok at
7:45 pm on June 27.
