REF: 08 RANGOON 498
1. (SBU) On June 19, the National League for Democracy (NLD)
held a private ceremony at its Rangoon headquarters to mark
the 64th birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK). NLD members
and supporters attended, but - consistent with past practice
- diplomats were not invited. Police observed the event, but
unlike last year when several NLD members were arrested
(reftel),authorities did not interfere with today's
ceremony. We have received no reports of any significant
gatherings or disturbances elsewhere in Rangoon.
2. (SBU) Also on June 19, the NLD Women's Committee released
a four-page statement in Burmese commemorating ASSK's
birthday, praising her contributions to her party and
country, professing her innocence, and calling on the regime
to release her and all political prisoners.
3. (SBU) We translated the Department's June 18 statement
concerning ASSK's birthday and distributed it in both English
and Burmese on the Embassy's website, at the American Center,
and, via email, to our contacts in the media and NGO
communities. In addition, we delivered copies directly to
the NLD at its headquarters.
