1. (C) A Regional Security Office police contact reported
that on June 7 officials released the six persons who were
detained after approaching the Embassy to ask for assistance
(reftel). According to the police contact, the five family
members and their friend were released after posting a bail
bond. We are seeking more information about what, if
anything, they have been charged with and the status of their
head of household, whose arrest prompted their appeal to the
Embassy.
2. (C) As mentioned in reftel, on June 5 we contacted the
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Rangoon to
inform the ICRC of this case and to request that it contact
the family to see what assistance, if any, it can provide.
On June 5, the ICRC's Head of Protection in Rangoon, Dominik
Urban, told us the ICRC is not in a position to initiate
contact with families in Burma on cases, but said the ICRC
will see what it can do if the family makes an approach. We
are seeking a secure way to pass this message to the family,
without further endangering them.
