1. (C) Recently-released opposition lawyer U Aung Thein
informed us that an East Rangoon District Court sentenced
seven National League for Democracy (NLD) members to between
five and 10 years' imprisonment on March 30 (see para 3 for
list). According to U Aung Thein, the seven men - arrested
in 2008 - were convicted of possession of explosive
materials. In September 2008, the regime publicly accused
these men along with several others - including human rights
activist U Myint Aye - of organizing bombings and public
demonstrations (reftel).
2. (C) All seven activists are currently in Insein prison.
Our contacts did not have any additional information
regarding their condition. The NLD comments that all seven
men are rank-and-file members rather than senior party
officials.
3. (SBU) Below is a list of the seven Thingangyun Township
NLD members sentenced on March 30:
- U Tin Mya, sentenced to five years
- U Aung Than Tun, sentenced to five years
- Ko Aung Tun, sentenced to five years
- Ko Aung Kyaw, sentenced to five years
- Ko Zaw Win, sentenced to five years
- Ko Khin Soe, sentenced to five years (previously sentenced
to eight years in December 2008 - now serving a total of 13
years)
- Ko Ye Zaw Htike, sentenced to ten years (previously
sentenced to eight years in December 2008 - now serving a
total of 18 years)
