1. (C) Charge made reftel demarche to Ambassador Mohammed
Azeroual, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation
Inspector General (U/S-equivalent) for the Middle East, on
September 7. On Middle East peace, Azeroual assured Charge
of continued Moroccan support for U.S. efforts and reiterated
that Israel must cease settlement activity. Concerning Iraq,
Azeroual said that Prime Minister Maliki needs to make
greater efforts to reduce ethnic divisions. Finally, on
Somalia, Azeroual understood our concern, noting that
Eritrea,s primary motivation in Somalia is countering
Ethiopia.
2. (SBU) Ambassador Azeroual planned to accompany Minister
of Foreign Affairs Taieb Fassi Fihri to Damascus on September
8.
