SUBJECT: SAG APPROVES RETURN OF U.S.-ORIGIN SPENT FUEL
Department of Minerals and Energy Directorate Nuclear Safety
official Ditebogo Kgomo informed Energy Officer on January 15
that the SAG cabinet approved the recommendations of the
feasibility study on participation in the Foreign Research
Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel Acceptance Program and
repatriation of the spent fuel back to the U.S. This cable
provides formal notification to DOE. According to the study,
the next step would be for DOE National Nuclear Security
Administration to send a technical team to South Africa.
Embassy is pleased that this key and long-awaited bilateral
cooperation step is proceeding.
