E.O. 12958: DECL: 10/19/2019 TAGS: PREL PHUM PTER KISL KPAL IS MP SUBJECT: MAURITIUS DISTANT FROM U.S. POSITION ON THE GOLDSTONE REPORT
REF: SECSTATE 98567
Classified By: CDA Virginia Blaser for reasons 1.4 (b, d)
(C) On October 14, the CDA delivered reftel points to Ambassador Patrice Cure, Head of Multilateral Directorate - Political, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade. Cure stated that debate was important for this issue, but it was unrealistic to restrict the debate to the HRC. He added that while the debate started in the HRC, there were other realities on the ground. The CDA pushed back, mentioning that the fact that Mauritius was on the HRC, yet not mired in the conflict, gave Mauritius the opportunity to support healthy dialogue and discussions while being seen as unbiased. Cure admitted that there have been missed opportunities in the past, but, consistent with Mauritian practice on this issue, voiced no additional support for the U.S. position. BLASER
