1. (SBU) Poloff delivered ref A points on the candidacy of
Lucretia Myers for re-election to the UN International Civil
Service Commission (ICSC) to Azad Belfort, Director of
International Organization Affairs at the Haitian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, June 10. Belfort said that Haiti's
delegation would vote for Myers, noting that Haiti does not
enjoy close relations with some of the European Union
countries that are also candidates for a WEOG position on the
ICSC.
2. (SBU) Belfort also renewed his request (ref B) that the
United States support Haiti's candidate for the UN Advisory
Committee on Administrative and Budget Questions, Wesley
Cazeau, during the upcoming General Assembly. He said that
Haiti had already received 30 guarantees of support and that
its principal rival is the Jamaican candidate. He added that
a U.S. vote for Cazeau would be especially appreciated in
view of Haiti's frequent support for U.S. candidates in
international fora, most recently during a tight election for
a position on an OAS human rights panel during the OAS
General Assembly (ref C).
