1. (SBU) Per reftel, PolEconPDOff asked Mr. Tom Kartoebi,
the Head of the Americas Division at Suriname,s Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, whether the Government of Suriname (GOS) is
interested in joining the International Renewable Energy
Agency (IRENA). Mr. Kartoebi said that he has not heard of
any plans to join IRENA, but he noted that the GOS is
exploring the generation of biofuels as a way to diversify
its energy supplies beyond its limited domestic supply of
crude oil.
2. (SBU) COMMENT. Post believes that the GOS is interested
in at least politically supporting a multi-lateral renewable
energy initiative, especially since the GOS sent a delegation
to the 2008 International Renewable Energy Conference in
Washington DC. END COMMENT.
