1. (U) On May 5, Pol-Econ Chief met with Edmund Rozenblad, Chief
Veterinary Officer for the Government of Suriname, and conveyed the
points in Reftel. Rozenblad assured Pol-Econ Chief that although on
April 27 he had initially set an import ban on raw pork and live
swine, he had lifted the ban after forty-eight hours after
ascertaining that there was no threat of animal- or product-to-human
transmission.
2. (U) Rozenblad also noted that since live animal imports to
Suriname are sporadic, and generally originate in Europe, and
because it is usually processed rather than raw pork that is
imported into Suriname, there had been little to no effect on
overall trade with the United States as a result of the temporary
import ban.
