1. (C/NF) In response to December 18 reftel demarche by
PolMinCouns, Director General for the Middle East and Maghreb John
Holmes of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
confirmed on December 22 that he was prepared to meet with the
Iranian Charge d'Affaires in Ottawa to make the first appeal on
behalf of the Amcit cases. He will then ask Canadian Charge
d'Affaires in Tehran Dennis Horak to follow up once he returns to
Iran after the Christmas holidays.
2. (C/NF) Holmes noted that, following the earlier success in the
Bahari consular case, there had been a joint public statement. He
expressed FM Cannon's willingness to do so if there is a release in
any of these cases, and asked about our possible interest in doing
so. Please advise.
