(C) On September 15, Poloffs shared reftel message on Iran
with Counselor Panayiotis Papadopoulos in the Cyprus MFA's
Multilateral Affairs Department. Papadopoulos stated that
the GOC supports a diplomatic solution to the issue of Iran's
nuclear program and views it as "good news" that Iran will be
meeting with the "P5 1" on October 1. Papadopoulos also
stated that the GOC stands behind all international treaties
concerning non-proliferation and agrees that Iran should live
up to obligations in this regard. As to specific action the
GOC might take to pressure Iran, Panayiotis stressed that
Cyprus would work within the EU and follow its lead regarding
any particular course of action, including further sanctions
against the Iranian government.
