UNCLAS NICOSIA 000590 SENSITIVE SIPDIS DEPARTMENT FOR EUR/SE, EEB/TPP/MTAA/ABT GARY CLEMENTS AND MIKE LURIE AND MARISA PLOWDEN OFFICE OF THE COUNSELOR E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: EAID ETRD EAGR UNGA CY SUBJECT: CYPRUS STILL CONSIDERING ATTENDANCE AT UNGA FOOD SECURITY EVENT REF: SECSTATE 93894 (SBU) On September 11, Poloff delivered reftel invitation to Counselor Marios Kountourides and Second Secretary Alexis Phedonos-Valet in the Cyprus MFA's Department of Multilateral Affairs and International Organizations. Kountourides stated the GOC would likely attend, but the invitation would need to be taken under consideration. Kountourides suggested that involving civil society in the discussion on food security could be useful, and that NGOs might be given a role to play at the event. On September 15, Poloff followed-up with Kountourides to confirm attendance; Kountourides still had no confirmation of GOC attendance but promised to inform Poloff as soon as an answer is ready. Post will report any further information. URBANCIC
