1. (U) On August 18, POLOFF delivered reftel points on the
GOB's recent conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK) to Cyprus
MFA Burma Desk Officer Sevak Avedissian. Avedissian said
that the GOC and the EU share the USG's strong concern over
the verdict and continuing detention of ASSK. Avedissian
also noted that ASSK's conviction is particularly
troublesome, though certainly not unexpected, given the
upcoming elections next year. Avedissian stated that while
it is unfortunate that the "Asian actors" have been unwilling
to take a firmer stance against the regime, the GOC and the
EU fully intend to put additional pressure on the GOB, and
pointed to the EU's action broadening sanctions on August 13.
