1. (C) On July 17, Poloffs delivered reftel points to Cyprus
MFA Georgia Desk Officer, Salina Shambos. Shambos stated
that both the GOC and EU strongly support the EU Monitoring
Mission (EUMM) in Georgia and would almost certainly vote to
renew its mandate in September. Shambos avoided comment on a
possible role for the U.S. in the EUMM, adding that the
picture may clarify after next week's GAERC. The same day,
the Embassy followed-up on the demarche with Acting Head of
the MFA's Department on Common Foreign and Security Policy,
Charis Christodoulidou. Christodoulidou said that the idea
of the U.S. playing a role in EUMM was raised at the last EU
Political Director's meeting in Stockholm, but, "no ideas
were finalized." Christodoulidou stated that the GOC, while
very much in favor of cooperation between the U.S. and the
EU, is not yet prepared to discuss specifics on a US role in
EUMM. Christodoulidou, like Shambos, expects more
information after the GAERC.
