1. (SBU) Per reftel request, on June 12 Post Econ Officer spoke with
Solon Kassinis, Director of Energy, at the Ministry of Commerce,
Industry, and Tourism regarding the USG'S intention to join the
International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Kassinis welcomed
the news that the USG was considering joining IRENA and said his
government was supportive of USG goals for this new organization.
The GOC will also support the UAE as IRENA's headquarters. Antonis
Paschalides, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism will
represent Cyprus at the June 28-30 IRENA preparatory meeting in
Egypt.
